Wonton noodles in Cantonese we called “sai yong”, which is popular in Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. The dish is usually served in a hot broth, garnished with leafy vegetables, and wonton dumplings.

I was so excited to try out their popular Sai Yong when my man told me Mak’s noodle family opens its first Malaysian outlet in 1 Utama Shopping Centre. Chef Jonny Yu, a grandson-in-law of noodle patriarch Mak Woon-Chi has been hailed as one of Hong Kong’s top purveyors of wonton noodles, whose recipe for these has endured three generations.

Well, 百闻不如一食, let’s give it a try! I brought my mother along as she just came back from Hong Kong and she misses the Sai Yong. In order to dodge the queue, we went on a weekday noon. ImageYou can see it from the picture above, I supposed you have to wait for at least 20 minutes to be seated if you come on a public holiday or weekend? There is the menu on the left-hand side for your to choose your meal so that it can speed up the waiting time. Let’s see what do they have:

My mother would like to have their signature Sai Yong – sea prawn wonton noodle soup RM12.90 and everyone knows I have seafood allergies, yet I insisted on trying out their noodle with prawn dumplings RM14.90.

It was plain-looking when it reaches the table, I hope it tastes good. There are four prawn wontons concealed beneath.

What we expected: The firm and springy noodles + the plump wontons with a juicy crunch
What we had: tasteless and thin noodles + convincingly juicy plump wontons with fresh sea prawns.

Yes, it is overrated and yes, I am quite sure you can get a better bowl of local wonton noodles in SS2 with a more affordable price without GST. Also, just a gentle reminder, they only accept cash.Image-14

Overall it was a little disappointment but I am still recommending their wontons.
